Sonja Moonear’s journey into the world of electronic music began in the mid-90s when she immersed herself in the Geneva underground scene. It was here that she traded her piano for turntables and a Roland R8 drum machine, diving headfirst into the world of DJing and production.
Sonja Moonear, born Sonja Mounir in 1978, has become a driving force in the Swiss electronic music scene. With a unique background that blends classical piano training with a love for 80s icons like Depeche Mode and David Bowie, Moonear has crafted a distinctive sound that defies easy categorization.
Her big break came in 2002 when she became a resident DJ at the legendary Weetamix club in Geneva. This platform allowed her to hone her skills and develop her unique style, blending house, techno, and experimental sounds into a musical language all her own. From there, Moonear’s career took off internationally. She’s graced the decks at renowned clubs and festivals around the world, from Panorama Bar in Berlin to D-Edge in Brazil.
Moonear is also an accomplished producer and remixer. Her tracks have found homes on labels like Karat and Perlon, showcasing her innovative approach to crafting electronic soundscapes. She also runs the label Ruta5, which serves as a platform for her creative vision and contributes to the growth of the Swiss electronic music community.
In addition to her work as a DJ and producer, Moonear is also a sound designer for the Swiss-French TV station RTS. This role allows her to bring her musical expertise to a different medium, crafting soundscapes and compositions for television.
